David Muir brings the news to people every night as the anchor for ABC World News.

Muir got his start in the broadcasting industry at the age of 13, when he joined a local news station in his hometown of Syracuse as an intern. In 2003, he joined ABC News where he covered countless historic events and reported from around the world.

After a decade at the station, he was named as Diane Sawyer’s replacement. Since then, he’s continued to interview multiple political figures, win several prestigious awards, moderate Presidential debates and more.

“All of the noise that you hear afterward, about which candidate won the debate, the moderators win or lose, that’s just noise,” Muir said of his experience moderating the 2024 debate during a September appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark. “You all know that. The most important thing to remember is that you all have the power.”

He’s Got Upstate Roots

Muir was born in Syracuse and grew up in Onondaga Hill. He went to school at Ithaca College, where he graduated magna cum laude. While Muir resides in New York City now, he does spend time upstate and bought a home on Skaneateles Lake.

“This job takes me all over the world, and I can’t think of a better place to catch my breath,” Muir said to Syracuse.com in September 2023.

While Muir’s job has taken him to many different locations over the years, the broadcaster still enjoys catching the sights in his free time. His social media page is full of snaps of him in Italy, Greece, France, Vietnam and more.

“Sacre-Coeur,” he captioned a photo of him outside the Parisian landmark. “Paris never disappoints.”

His love of travel started at a young age as he studied abroad in Salamanca, Spain, while in college.

He’s Good Friends With Kelly Ripa

Muir and Ripa have been in the ABC family for more than two decades. While they don’t work together every day, they have formed a sweet friendship. Muir has attended several events alongside Ripa including charity fundraisers, birthday parties and more.

“15 years of making us smile in the morning,” Muir captioned a picture of him and the morning show host in February 2016. “Great fun celebrating my friend @kellyripa this am.”

In addition to being close with Ripa, Muir is also pals with her husband, Mark Consuelos.

“Happy birthday @instasuelos – you make every view better – truly,” Muir wrote via Instagram in March 2019.

He’s a Proud Uncle

Muir comes from a blended family with an older sibling and two younger step-siblings. While Muir does not have kids of his own — if you don’t count his adorable pup, Axel — he’s the doting uncle to six nieces and three nephews.

“My squad left,” Muir captioned a selfie of him, one of his nephews and two of his nieces. “Sent the nieces and nephew back to school. Bring #4 next time.”

He Loves to Give Back

Over the years, the reporter has attended several charity events and worked with organizations like the World Food Programme, Unicef, Save the Children and more. Muir also established a scholarship fund for Ithaca College students who want to study abroad like he did.
