Date:

There are golf tournaments on both sides of the Atlantic this week, with a PGA Tour event in Hawaii and a team tournament in Abu Dhabi on the DP World Tour.

There’s a cheque of $1.4m for the winner of the Sony Open, while Great Britain & Ireland face Continental Europe clash in the Hero Cup in Abu Dhabi.

We’ve scoured the stats and form ahead of both events and here are our selections for the two events.

Here’s Hawaii Henley can challenge

It was Hideki Matsuyama who claimed top spot in the Sony Open 12 months ago to register his eighth title on the US PGA Tour. The Japanese ace needed a play-off to eventually clinch the victory and the man he beat may well be the man to follow this time around.

Russell Henley shot the week’s lowest score – a first-round 62 – to help him reach -23 on the Sunday, but a costly six at the first play-off hole led to him finishing second to Matsuyama.

The man from Georgia is currently ranked 31st in the world and already has a tournament win to his name this season in the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba in November.

After a month off, Henley finished T30 in last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions, with rounds of 69-70-71-70 in Kapalua. That will stand him in good stead for this week in Honolulu, where happy memories having shone last year and lifted the trophy in 2013 with a three-stroke victory.

Tip: Outright winner – Russell Henley@ 20/1 with bet365

Horschel can build on weekend

Billy Horschel joined Henley on 12 under par last week but got there in a different way and should head into the Sony Open full of confidence.

After opening rounds of 76 and 71 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, the 36-year-old finished strongly, carding a 64 on Saturday before a final round of 69.

Horschel heads to Hawaii looking to improve on a T36 performance there in 2022, when he had an opening round of 65. It will be a low-scoring week and the stats show the man from Florida heading in the right direction in the early stages of the year, ranking 27th on the PGA Tour birdie average.

Tip: Outright winner – Billy Horschel @ 30/1 with bet365

Consistent Hughes can contend

In October, Mackenzie Hughes won his second PGA Tour title, six years after his first, with victory in the Sanderson Farms Championship.

In his previous six tournaments, the 32-year-old has finished T25-1-T23-T16-MC-T21 and he sits sixth in the FedEx Cup standings.

His first and final rounds (66 and 65) in Honolulu showed he is capable of challenging this week and he currently ranks 1st on the PGA Tour in putting from six feet.

Tip: Top-five finish – Mackenzie Hughes @ 12/1 with bet365

Experience on GB & Ireland’s side

The inaugural Hero Cup takes place from Friday, with the new team event held at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club being seen as preparation for the Ryder Cup in the autumn.

The format is one session of foursomes, one session of fourballs then singles matches on the third and final day. The course is used for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, which has seen a lot of GB and Irish success in recent years.

Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrell Hatton and Shane Lowry have all won that tournament in the last five years, with Belgium’s Thomas Pieters the only player in the European team to enjoy success there.
