Super Bowl 2024: Chiefs beat 49ers in OT thriller on walk-off TD pass by Patrick Mahomes – Yahoo Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions for a third time in the Patrick Mahomes era.

Mahomes found Mecole Hardman for a walk-off touchdown in overtime on Sunday to deliver a 25-22 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers in a thriller. The Super Bowl victory is the second straight for the Chiefs and their third in five seasons. It also marks their second win over the 49ers in the Super Bowl after beating San Francisco following the 2019 season.

Mahomes was stellar yet again, completing 34 of 46 passes for 333 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He led the Chiefs on a game-tying drive at the end of regulation, then the game-winning drive in overtime. He converted two first downs with his feet in the extra session, including a run on fourth-and-1 to keep the Chiefs alive.

The effort earned Mahomes his third Super Bowl MVP trophy.

  • And now Patrick Mahomes has been named Super Bowl MVP. His third honor in three Super Bowl wins. What a legacy.

  • Travis Kelce was excited, as expected:

  • Patrick Mahomes: “The Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs. Just know that.”

  • Taylor Swift and Jason Kelce take the field for the postgame celebration.

  • Andy Reid gets yet another Gatorade bath.

  • What a win for Kansas City. The Chiefs are back-to-back champions and can officially be called a dynasty with a third championship in five seasons. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid further cement their status among the pantheon of all-time greats.

  • San Francisco’s drive stalls, and the 49ers are forced to attempt a field goal. Jake Moody is good from 27 yards to give the 49ers a 22-19 lead. The Chiefs now have a chance to answer.

  • The 49ers are driving, taking advantage of the third-down holding penalty. Christian McCaffrey runs 24 yards to set San Francisco up deep in Kansas City territory.

  • Massive penalty in overtime. Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie was called for a holding on third-and-13. Brock Purdy’s pass fell incomplete, but the 49ers picked up a first down thanks to the penalty.

  • The 49ers won the toss and will receive the ball. If they score a touchdown, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense will have the chance to respond.

  • It’s the first overtime Super Bowl under new postseason rules. Each team is guaranteed a possession. A touchdown on the first possession will not end the game.

  • And we have overtime for the second time ever in the Super Bowl.

  • Patrick Mahomes’ pass to Travis Kelce in the end zone falls incomplete, and the Chiefs opt for a Harrison Butker field goal with six seconds remaining. Butker connects to tie the game at 19-19 and likely sets up overtime with three seconds remaining.

  • Travis Kelce with a huge play. Converts a third-and-7 catch into a 22-yard gain to set Kansas City up at the San Francisco 11-yard line with 10 seconds remaining. The Chiefs will have at least one shot a a go-ahead touchdown in the red zone.

  • A third first down on the drive puts Kansas City squarely in field-goal range. Chiefs take a timeout with the ball at San Francisco’s 36-yard line with 40 seconds remaining.
